Nutrition and Exercise
Exercise and a healthy weight are important to good health. This is even more important for people who have chronic health issues and chronic back or neck pain. Extra weight can cause pressure on the spine and discs of the neck and back and on other joints throughout the body. Are you in the healthy weight category? One way to find out is to consult a BMI (body mass index) calculator.
Our goal at Kentucky Pain Management Services (KPMS) is to help each patient work toward the goal of the “healthy weight” category. You can find your BMI by consulting a chart or online at: http://nhlbisupport.com/bmi/ A Healthy Weight packet is available to assist patients on their road to a healthier diet. You can ask any staff member at KPMS for these materials or ask for an appointment with the patient educator for a one-on-one meeting to discuss healthy lifestyle techniques.
Exercise is also very important to good health. People with chronic pain often think they cannot participate in exercise because of their pain. The truth is that you need to exercise to feel better if you have chronic pain. Strengthening the muscles that surround your problem areas will help to decrease your pain and increase your ability to participate in needed activities of daily living. Talk to your pain management doctor about a walking program or water aerobic program. Information on both of these is available in the Healthy Weight packet and the patient educator will meet with you one-on-one if you like.
Water Aerobics
Water aerobics are an excellent way to get moving and get your exercise!!! Water aerobics are easier on the joints than traditional aerobics and most find it quite easy to perform—even those with chronic pain and arthritis. Ask your pain doctor to be sure it is ok, and then sign up and give it a try!!!
There are 3 locations in the London and Hazard areas that provide Water Aerobics:
- YMCA of London (606)878-8333
- Baptist Family Fitness of Corbin (606)526-0007
- The Hazard Pavilion (606)436-4200
Call any of the listed sites or KPMS for details.
