What is Hypertension?
Coexisting Conditions
Did you know that 1
in 3 Americans have
hypertension? High
blood pressure, or
hypertension, is a
serious condition
that can lead to
heart problems and
stroke. Many do not
know they have
hypertension
because there may
not be any
symptoms. Some
refer to hypertension
as the “silent killer”
because of this.
What is blood
pressure?
Blood pressure is the
force of your blood
pressing against the
walls of the arteries
as your heart pumps
out the blood.
It is very important
to know what your
blood pressure is
and to see a Primary Care or
Family Practioner to
monitor your blood
pressure.
Hypertension can
be managed with
diet, exercise and
medication. If your
blood pressure runs
high over a period
of time, your blood
vessel walls and
other organs such
as kidneys, eyes,
and heart, can
become damaged.
This damage can
be irreversible. We
encourage all KPMS
patients to keep
their blood pressure
within the normal
range and to keep
their Primary Care
Provider or Family
Doctor aware if their
blood pressure is
outside of the
normal range. The
nurse here at KPMS
may contact your
Family doctor and
let them know if your blood pressure
has been running
too high or low.
Daily exercise, such
as walking, can help
to decrease high
blood pressure as
can a heart healthy
diet. A low fat, low
cholesterol, and low
sodium diet can
also help to
decrease your
blood pressure, as
can weight loss if
you are overweight.
