The Road from “Patient” Back To “Person”
Has your chronic pain taken over your life? Do you think about your pain constantly?
Many chronic pain patients experience this and have a hard transition from the role of being a patient back to having a “normal” life. Your new “normal” may be different. It might take you an hour to wash your dishes instead of 15 minutes. This transition can take time and a new frame of mind.
The first step in your journey needs to be education. Learn all you can about your pain condition. Write down questions you may have before your doctor visits. Ask your doctor to explain your diagnosis to you as well as the plan he/she has for your treatment.
Another step should be self care. Ask your doctor what you can do to improve your condition. Whether it is pacing your activities, losing weight, or starting a new walking program - the decision to take that step can change your whole outlook on life.
Last, but definitely not least, don’t give up!!! There are organizations and support groups out there to help you through your journey. Visit your local book store or library for books on chronic pain. Ask your doctor about seeing a Psychosocial Counselor –they specialize in helping you find ways to cope with your pain. In life, pain is inevitable—misery is optional.
