What is TENS?
Has the doctor prescribed a “TENS unit” for you? Many patients have ever heard of this treatment option. TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. TENS units work by sending electrical pulses across the surface of the skin and along the nerves. The stimulating pulses help keep pain signals from reaching the brain. TENS units stimulate the production of endorphins – a natural pain reducer in our body. This treatment option can also help to relieve muscle spasms which increases blood supply to the affected area. This can actually increase healing time in some injuries. There is a very low risk of any side effects from TENS-- local irritation being the most common. Some patients need less pain medication when used in conjunction with TENS therapy.
